It was a very closely fought game but the New York Yankees managed to do it again with an extra-inning win over the Oakland Athletics at the Yankee Stadium.
When Ichiro Suzuki led off the bottom of the 13th inning with an infield single it seemed that the game was almost over. However, later in the 14th inning Eduardo Nunez topped a spinning ground ball which was misplayed by Brandon Moss, allowing the Yankees' winning run to score from third with two outs. It took them 5 hours and 43 minutes to defeat the Oakland Athletics 10-9.
It was an intensely fought game with several ups and downs for both the teams, but the Yankees held their nerves and emerged victorious eventually. The Yankees were trailing 9-5, in the top of the 13th inning, after the A's hit three home runs in consecutive power-packed punches and it seemed the game was over for the New Yorkers.
Had it not been for Suzuki who reached base in the bottom of the inning followed by Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano, it would have been a different story for the Yankees. According to STATS LLC., the Yankees won just for the second time in their team history after trailing by at least four runs in extra innings (9-5). They did it in 1980 previously against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The game was tied at 5-5 prior to the 13th inning after the Athletics pushed across a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Carter. The Yankees however, had a great chance to win in the 12th inning when Ibanez led off with a double to center advancing to third on a wild pitch but was cut down at the plate on Russell Martin's bouncer to second.
The Yankees had defeated the Athletics in the first two games of the series, their last match up against a winning team before the end of the regular season. Meanwhile Baltimore Orioles' 9-6 victory over Boston Red Sox means that the Orioles had crept closer to the Yankees at the top of the American League East.
Yankees Manager, Joe Girardi said that they were aware of the importance of that game and every game the rest of the way out.
