New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list, but the Giants remain "optimistic" that he will be ready for the team's first game Sept. 8 on the road against the Dallas Cowboys at newly named AT&T Stadium.

Pierre-Paul, who had back surgery less than two months ago, will be one of five players to open up training camp on the PUP list. Guard Chris Snee (hip), fullback Henry Hynoski (knee), cornerback Terell Thomas (knee) and defensive back Markus Kuhn (knee) all remain sidelined at the opening of Giants training camp.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is confident that Pierre-Paul will be ready to go when the season commences.

"He's coming," Coughlin told the Daily News after watching the Giants take their pre-camp conditioning test in East Rutherford, N.J. "He's done well. He's worked hard. I've seen him the last two days. He's optimistic."

Last year, Pierre-Paul had 6.5 sacks and one interception. Pierre-Paul had 16.5 sacks in the 2011 season and enters his fourth season with the Giants. Pierre-Paul has played in 48 career games and has amounted 27 sacks and 132 tackles, all with the Giants.

The Giants remain optimistic that the 24-year-old's recovery will go smoothly as he makes his way back from his back surgery.

Pierre-Paul is a Super Bowl Champion and a two-time Pro Bowler.
