Miguel Cotto Next Fight: Canelo Alvarez Bout Allowed If Both Guarantee Winner Faces Gennady Golovkin [VIDEO]

While Gennady "GGG" Golovkin is the current People's Champion in boxing, Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez are still bigger moneymakers by a wide margin. That's why WBC middleweight champion Cotto has ignored the frightening Kazakh knockout artist and prefers to face the popular Mexican, even if both pose significant threats.

Cotto may be the lineal champion, but he is far from a true middleweight. Most question if his small frame can withstand Golovkin's power; Alvarez is built for the 160-pound division as well, but he has campaigned at 154 pounds his whole career.

The problem regarding Alvarez-Cotto is that the WBC made Golovkin, boxing's most avoided fighter, the mandatory challenger for Cotto's belt. Cotto was allowed one voluntary defense, which will happen June 6 at the Barclays Center vs. ex-middleweight champion Daniel Geale. According to reports, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, the man who made Golovkin the No. 1 contender, is switching gears now.

Per Yahoo Sports, Kevin Iole wrote that Sulaiman is willing to sanction Cotto vs. Alvarez if they both agree in writing that the winner will face Golovkin in their next fight.

Golovkin appeared to hint in his post-fight interview that he took shots from Willie Monroe Jr. on Saturday night purposely to entertain the fans and also look less invincible so that big names wouldn't be afraid to fight him.

''I think Gennady wanted to give the fans a little more value for their money, because the Rubio fight only lasted two rounds,'' promoter Tom Loeffler said. Golovkin himself said that he could have finished Monroe in Round 2, but preferred to get rounds in.

''It was a good big drama show,'' Golovkin said. ''I was happy with my performance. Willie is a very tough fighter. I felt very strong tonight. I knocked him down twice, but I didn't want an easy round the next round. I wanted to keep working.''
