Alex Rodriguez Return Date After August 1? A-Rod Says Rehab Plan Up To Yankees, Likely to Be Fined For Seeking Unauthorized Second Opinion

The bizarre saga involving Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees could be settling down after the latest spat over Rodriguez's alleged quadriceps injury moved the third baseman to get a second opinion, prompting the second doctor to proclaim A-Rod injury free on New York radio stations.

On the 20th and final day of A-Rod's rehabilitation program from his hip surgery,  he supposedly strained his quad, likely necessitating another disabled list trip. There are conflicting reports, but Rodriguez is believed to have brought the injury to the Yankees' attention, only to perform an about-face and declare himself ready to play.

He sought a second opinion from Michael Gross, a doctor who has recently been disciplined by the state of New Jersey for improperly prescribing medications, including steroids. Of course, the larger controversy surrounding Rodriguez is a potentially lengthy suspension from MLB.

A-Rod is the biggest fish in the Biogenesis clinic pond, now that former National League MVP Ryan Braun has been suspended for the rest of the 2013 season. Some sources have said that the league has far more implicating evidence against A-Rod, and will likely seek a longer punishment for him.

This has caused speculation that the Yankees did indeed exaggerate his quad strain, so that Rodriguez can't further embarrass the club by returning briefly, only to draw a suspension.

While Rodriguez seemed irked by the Yanks' decision to prolong his rehab, he went on New York's WFAN radio station and discussed the issue. "Obviously, I'm an employee. I have to follow my bosses and I was on the phone with both of my bosses. They said there is a protocol," A-Rod said.

He also released a statement that read like an attempt to bury the hatchet once and for all.

"I think the Yanks and I crossed signals. I'm excited and ready to play and help this team win a championship. I feel great and I'm ready and want to be in the lineup Friday night. Enough doctors. Let's play," Rodriguez said.
