Braylon Edwards Taking New York Jets Physical [REPORT]

The New York Jets hope that with Braylon Edwards the third time really is the charm. According to reports, Edwards is taking a physical with the Jets on Wednesday and if he passes he will once again re-join the Jets.

The Jets claimed the veteran wide receiver off of waivers last December after he was released by the Seattle Seahawks.  Edwards, 30, also spent time with the Jets from 2009-10.

The move would make sense for the Jets considering the lack of depth they have at wide receiver. The Jets placed Santonio Holmes on the physically unable to perform list Tuesday and it is unclear if he'll be ready in time to start the season. Holmes is slowly rehabbing from a severe Lisfranc foot injury.

While Edwards isn't that much of an impact player at this stage of his NFL career, he could be a better fit than the other options the Jets have, and he has worked with head coach Rex Ryan in the past.

Without Holmes or an outside signing, the Jets would look to Jeremy Kerley at wideout, or hope that Stephen Hill can bounce back in his sophomore season with the team after a lackluster rookie showing. Other long-shot in-house options are Clyde Gates or Ben Obomanu, but it seems as though an agreement with Edwards would be the most logical choice. The Jets also worked out Laurent Robinson and Austin Collie this week, but there have been no reports on whether or not those players will join the team.

The Jets originally acquired Edwards in 2009 in a trade with the Cleveland Browns and stayed with the team until after the 2010 season. His second stint came late last season after he was dropped by the Seahawks.

Edwards averaged 17.1 yards per catch and had seven touchdowns in 2010 with the Jets, but only had 18 catches between the Jets and Seahawks last season, and had just 15 catches with the San Francisco 49ers in 2011.
