The legend of South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney continues to build.
Already projected as the consensus top player in next year’s NFL Draft, according to the Sporting News, the 6-foot-6, 274 pound tackle ran a 4.46 in the 40-yard dash during a recent practice, leaving coaches and teammates as stunned as they were on the day he knocked Michigan’s Vincent Smith’s helmet off on a tackle many consider the best they’ve ever seen.
The hit was nominated for a 2013 ESPY Award as the best individual play of the year. So impressed was teammate Mike Davis he instantly took to Twitter to post news of his teammate’s exploits. “Think Clowney ran a 4.46,” he wrote.
Impressive as it may be, in Clowney’s world it doesn’t even rate as his best all-time effort. Last March during the Gamecocks’ pro day, Clowney clocked a 4.5 in the 40.
After finishing sixth in voting last season, Clowney is considered a leading favorite for this year’s Heisman Award. He begins the year as the reigning Hendricks Award winner as the nation’s top defensive end. After just two seasons, Clowney already ranks as the Gamecocks’ fifth all-time leading pass rusher with 21 sacks.
