As Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick tries to earn his starting spot in Chip Kelly's offense against second-year passer Nick Foles and rookie Matt Barkley, he must now contend with off-the-field distractions caused by his brother Marcus' tweeting.
Marcus Vick took to social media to weigh in on the George Zimmerman trial, tweeting, "Zimmerman better get 30+ years in prison. If my brother had to do 2 years it's a must. Not self defense when u chase down an innocent kid."
Michael Vick famously served two years in prison for his role in a dog-fighting ring named "Bad Newz Kennels."
After Zimmerman was found not guilty, Marcus unloaded a violent, profanity-laden tweet that read, "Zimmerman u peace of DOG s**t if I ever seen u I would run up n let u beat my a** then I'll pop u right between the eyes u cricket B**ch."
Michael Vick has previously had to scold his brother for inappropriate tweets; last season Marcus ranted about Philadelphia's misuse of his brother and the blame placed on him for the Eagles' failures.
At the moment, Michael needs to focus entirely on the task at hand; fending off two viable starting candidates. When Vick suffered a concussion last year Foles filled in ably. As for Barkley, a fourth-round draft choice, Kelly is familiar with Barkley's skill set from their days opposing one another in the Pac-12.
Vick rebounded from his jail term in 2010 with the Eagles when he threw 21 touchdown passes and just six interceptions, while rushing for 676 yards and nine touchdowns; he did all that in just 11 starts.
His career took a turn for the worse in 2011, however, with 18 touchdown passes and 14 picks. Last year, Vick struggled even more, playing in only 10 games and tossing 12 touchdown passes to go with 10 interceptions, as his fumbling problem worsened.
