The mother of slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin took the stand today in the second-degree murder trial stemming from her son’s death and unequivocally told a riveted and packed Florida courtroom it was her son’s voice crying out for help on the night he was killed.
After listening to tapes from 911 calls placed that night, a still grieving Sybrina Fulton told the court, “I heard my son screaming. I would hope for this to never have happened, and he would still be here.”
Self-appointed neighborhood watch patrolman George Zimmerman has pled not guilty and remains on trial, claiming he only fired in self-defense after being attacked by the unarmed Martin.
The state wrapped its case against Zimmerman late Friday, but not before medical examiner Dr. Shipping Boa described the teen’s death as a “homicide” and said he was “suffering” for a time after the bullet fired by Zimmerman pierced his heart.
“His heart was still beating. He was still alive; he was in pain,” Boa told the court
Frustrated over a rash of recent burglaries in his gated community neighborhood, prosecutors contend Zimmerman, 29, profiled Martin on the night of February 26, 2012, following him throughout the neighborhood before finally confronting and physically struggling with him.
“He’s in heaven now,” Fulton told the court of her son.
