Kate Upton and sports are constantly linked, whether it's rumors of athletes she is dating, or gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated's annual swimsuit issue.

A little known fact, though, is that in order for Upton's red-hot photos to make it into the issue, she needed to weather the frigid temperatures of Antarctica. In a behind the scenes video recently released by Sports Illustrated, Upton can be seen shivering, yet smiling, as bundled up photographers snap pictures.

Swimsuit issue editor MJ Day told CNN of their good fortune in the frozen climate. "Antarctica was "the 'Hail Mary' pass of our year. It could have had a blizzard. Kate could have had shivering fits you could not shoot around. (Instead) we had six days of perfect weather."

Although Upton's modeling in the sports magazine was steaming, Upton has been pretty icy toward some rumored ex-athlete beaus. Most recently, Upton took a perceived shot at Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander.

She tweeted a birthday message to a close friend of the pitcher's, Frank Viola III, that read "Happy Birthday to one of my favorite people ever, @FrankViola3!!!. Accompanying the message was an e-card that read, "Happy Birthday to a friend of a friend who I now like more than the original friend."

Many took it as a slight toward Verlander, although both parties deny that they ever carried on a romantic relationship.

Upton has also been connected in the past to much-maligned New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. After Notre Dame was shellacked by the Alabama Crimson tide in the BCS National Championship Game, Upton tweeted some encouragement to the Fighting Irish that doubled as a backhand slap to Sanchez and Gang Green.

"It's okay Notre Dame," she tweeted. "This happened to the Jets every week."
