Ray Lewis To Climb Mount Kilimanjaro To Raise Clean Water Awareness In Africa

Former Baltimore Ravens and Hall of Fame-bound linebacker Ray Lewis is set to scale Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro as part of an effort to raise money and awareness about the need for clean water in East Africa.

A two-time Defensive Player of the Year winner, Lewis, 38, left for Africa earlier this week, where he will be joined by former Bears Pro Bowler Tommie Harris and Doug Pitt, the brother of actor Brad Pitt, and a goodwill ambassador in Tanzania.  

According to The Baltimore Sun, the climb is slated to take place on July 8. At its peak point, Kilimanjaro’s elevation stands at 19, 340 feet.

In the days leading up to the climb, Lewis and the others have been handing out hearing aids to needy children in a nearby village as part of the TackleKili mission for World Serve International and Pros for Africa.

On the @TackleKili Twitter page, Lewis is shown passing out the devices to children under the posting “To give someone hearing for the 1st time in their life is Life changing."

After leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl, Lewis retired at the end of last season and now works a football analyst for ESPN. He issued a statement last month about his involvement in the climb.

“In one month, I will climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise money and awareness for clean water projects in East Africa," Lewis wrote. "I am so FIRED UP for this adventure, but until then, I need your help to bring clean water wells to thousands of children and families.
