Aaron Hernandez, the ex-New England Patriots star tight end who stands accused of orchestrating the murder of Odin Lloyd, and pulling the trigger in his shooting death, will be back in court again today at 9:00 a.m. Follow Day 36 of the court proceedings free here.
Thursday’s proceedings were interrupted by a bomb threat at noon, but following a two-hour delay nothing was found and everything went back to normal. Usually threats of explosives to a courtroom in a high-profile case qualifies as the biggest news, but in this case that’s up for debate.
That’s because Shayanna Jenkins, the fiancée of Hernandez, is expected to testify today. She can be compelled to the stand because she has been granted immunity. If she stonewalls, she may be held in contempt of court. Jenkins has already been charged with perjury after prosecutors alleged she lied about disposing of the .45 Glock that was used to kill Lloyd.
There is surveillance video from Hernandez’s home of Jenkins leaving the mansion with a large black trash bag, and returning without it.
Earlier in the trial Jenkins was a constant presence in court, sometimes whispering “I love you,” to Hernandez. Lately though, she has not been seen and certain information that has leaked pertaining to Hernandez’s flirtations with women have fueled speculation she could flip over to the prosecution.
It is also worth noting that Lloyd was dating Jenkins’ sister, Shaneah, when he was killed.
Without the murder weapon, and without credible motive for the killing established, Jenkins is seen by the prosecution as a potential nail in the coffin for their case, which is full of circumstantial evidence.
