Gabrielle Union, world famous actress and current girlfriend of three-time NBA champion shooting guard Dwyane Wade, has a new movie premiering tonight of which she is the headliner. It is called Being Mary Jane, on BET, and it will air at 10:30 p.m. ET.
In this new movie, Union is starring as a high-powered television news anchor, who must balance work, various relationships with men, as well as her different family obligations.
Speaking of her new role, Union called it "better" than leading gigs she has had in the past. After losing out to fellow actress Kerry Washington for the lead in the smash television show Scandal, Union became confident that she could find other roles like that which would be interesting and challenging to her. "It showed me that you don't have to settle. Luckily, the success of her and the show bred more work. Just from the audition process, I knew that I couldn't go backward." She added, "I didn't get 'Scandal,' but I got something better - which is my own show. It's all about building a legacy. This new opportunity is something I feel that can grow."
In Being Mary Jane, Union expects to show off her versatility. "If you loved me for one thing and may not have liked me in something else, this role gives the audience a chance to see that I can do more than one thing."
She called this role a "secret dream come true" and said she has studied CNN star Soledad O'Brien's work in preparation for the movie. "Her series took up a lot of space on my DVR," Union said. "I love how (O'Brien) delivers information. There's a news anchor's cadence that's different from an actor's cadence. If you do it wrong, you can come off cold or disconnected to the subject. I've been able to grow with the character in that manner."
