Rasheed Wallace could soon be back with the Detroit Pistons organization.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting Wallace is in late-stage talks to join new coach Maurice Cheeks staff as an assistant. Wallace previously played six seasons with the Pitons and is still revered by Detroit fans for his role on their 2004 title-winning team.

According to the Free Press, Wallace, 38, has spoken with both Cheeks and president of basketball operations Joe Dumars about a position. Wallace also previously played under Cheeks when both were with the Portland Trailblazers organization in the early 2000.

“Nothing is done yet, but it’s a good possibility,” Dumars told the Free Press. “What you do is lay out the amount of work it takes. You go through a typical day and typical week. It’s extremely important to do that. He’s been great about it. With young bigs, that type and personality and knowledge could be good for this.”

Indeed, if all goes through, Wallace is expected to assume the role of mentor for young big men Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe.

In all, Wallace played 16 NBA seasons, including an injury-prone stint with the Knicks 2012-13. He averaged 16 points and seven rebounds and was named to two NBA All-Star teams.
