The New York Yankees (38-31) return home from a West Coast road trip to face the most famous team in the west, the Los Angeles Dodgers (29-39), in The House That Ruth Built for a day-night double header. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and can be live streamed here. Yankees fans can catch the radio broadcast on WCBS 880, while Dodgers fans can listen in on 570 Fox Sports L.A.
Don Mattingly, a Yankee legend despite never winning a title, will be returning to the Bronx for the first time as a manager. Mattingly was a leading candidate to manage the Yanks after Joe Torre left, but the Yankees tapped Joe Girardi instead. Girardi went on to win a World Series in 2009.
"Coming to L.A. has been great, and obviously there's been a lot of turmoil this year, but I love what I'm doing and I like being in L.A," Mattingly said. He also said he holds no ill will toward Yankees management for not turning to him as Torre's successor.
"(Yankees management) treated me fairly I thought," Mattingly said to MLB.com. "Things work out for a reason. That would have been really bad timing for me. Terrible. I was going through some personal stuff that would have been miserable trying to manage for the first time and have that going on. So, that was a blessing in disguise."
The Yankees will hope being back home jumpstarts their stagnant offense, but they'll have to score runs without Mark Teixeira, who re-injured his wrist and may be headed for another disabled list stint.
The Yankees, now three games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East will send Phil Hughes (3-5, 4.89 ERA) to the hill, hoping he will rebound from a five-walk disaster in Oakland. "Putting together consecutive quality starts is) something that he's going through right now," Girardi said of his pitching staff. "He [Hughes] needs to figure that out for us."
Hughes will be opposed by Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-2, 2.85 ERA).
