Bethany Hamilton survived a shark attack and lost her left arm in 2003. Now, the 25-year-old is ready to embark on the scariest challenge of her life.
Motherhood.
Hamilton is 22 weeks pregnant and expecting her first child in early June. Taking to social media, the professional surfer and her husband, Adam Dirks, announced their exciting news on YouTube.
"It's been a pretty crazy last four months, finding out we're going to be parents," she said. "Life's going to be changing and [I'm] kind of starting to prep for bringing a new little being into the world. It's all really exciting, though."
The one question on everyone's mind, however, is whether Hamilton plans to continue surfing despite her added responsibilities.
"I've been surfing throughout my whole pregnancy," she added. "I surfed Teahupo'o and Pipeline. I plan to surf for as long as I can. Once the belly's pretty big, maybe mellow it out and spend more time swimming, just enjoying the ocean and doing other activities."
Despite her physical limitations, Hamilton is not deterred and fully believes she is capable of motherhood with one arm.
"Motherhood with one arm, I've been kind of thinking about it. I often forget that I have one arm, but when I think about a squirming baby, changing the diaper and just me and this squirmy baby," she says. "It could be really challenging."
Hamilton and Dirks are expecting the latest member of their family in early June. No name has been chosen yet and the couple expects to keep it a secret until his birth.
