Aaron Hernandez, the ex-New England Patriots star tight end who stands accused of orchestrating the murder of Odin Lloyd, and pulling the trigger in his shooting death, may face testimony against him from his fiancée Shayanna Jenkins. Follow the court proceedings free by clicking this link.
Shayanna Jenkins, whose sister Shaneah had been dating Lloyd at the time of his murder, is accused of helping Hernandez dispose of the murder weapon and faces her own perjury charges. The prosecution has now offered Shayanna Jenkins immunity, which means she will have to speak if called upon or face contempt of court charges.
“She now has one of two choices, testify or go to jail for contempt,” Martin J. Weinberg, a Boston defense attorney, said to The Boston Globe.
“Whether [prosecutors] expect the same testimony [as her grand jury statements] and just want to put the fiancee in front of the jury, and have the jury perhaps question her memory and whether she’s testifying truthfully, is one strategy I’ve seen. And another one is to ask harder questions and get better answers. ... It puts this woman in a very difficult position.”
The immunity reportedly doesn’t exactly protect her from the previous perjury charges, but her testimony during the trial can’t be used to prove past accusations. “Is she immunized from past perjury? Maybe,” Weinberg said. “Can they use this testimony to prove past perjury? Absolutely not.”
It is unknown whether Jenkins is going to flip on Hernandez. She is currently still living in his North Attleborough mansion, and has been seen mouthing “I love you” to the former football star.
