After a wild first two games that featured blown saves, bean ball wars and brawls, the Los Angeles Dodgers (28-36) and Arizona Diamondbacks (36-29) will shoot for a series win tonight at 10:10 in Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers radio broadcast can be heard on 570 Fox Sports LA, while the Diamondbacks broadcast can be found on AZ Sports 620. The game can be live streamed here.
Tempers flared last night as hot-hitting rookie Yasiel Puig was hit in the face by Ian Kennedy, sparking retaliation from Dodgers starter Zack Greinke against Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero. Kennedy responded again, throwing at Greinke's head, which caused the benches to clear and a fracas to erupt.
Both teams are hoping cooler heads will prevail tonight, because viewers and listeners are in for a pitching treat. Patrick Corbin (9-0, 1.98 ERA) of Arizona will face off with Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-2, 2.72 ERA).
Puig may be the talk of Los Angeles, but Ryu has been the Dodgers' top rookie in 2013, giving the team good innings since Day 1. Ryu started out hot, and as the season wears on he's only improving. In his last three starts, Ryu has eclipsed seven innings of work each time, allowing three runs total to cross home plate.
Meanwhile, Corbin has been even more effective than Ryu, if less flashy. His strikeout numbers aren't as gaudy as Ryu's but the Diamondbacks are loving his sub-2.00 ERA. Corbin has only surrendered more than three runs once in 12 starts, and has given Arizona six or more innings in every outing.
Corbin's strikeout and walk ratios are nearly identical to last year, when he pitched to a 6-8 record and 4.54 ERA, but his home runs per nine innings has dropped from 1.2 to 0.4. In essence, he has almost completely stopped giving up homers.
The angry Dodgers led by Yasiel Puig will see if they can reverse that trend.
