A Minnesota woman training for a half-marathon got the surprise of a lifetime during one of her training sessions. Trish Staine was experiencing aches and pains that she attributed to hard training, but they were in fact the pains of being in labor.

Staine started getting pains in her back that became so bad she was admitted to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minn. At the hospital, doctors informed her that she wasn't hurt, she was having a child.

Speaking with ABC News, Staine said, "They found a fetal heartbeat and I was like, 'No, that's not possible. They rushed me upstairs and within five minutes of getting into my room, she was born."

Staine named the baby Mira, according to reports, which is short for miracle. She said that she did not miss periods or gain any large amount of weight. "I've always been skeptical about all these TV shows and whatnot with people saying, 'Oh, I didn't know I was pregnant,'" Staine said. "I'm like that's impossible. ... As soon as I had her, I was like, 'I'm a believer.'"

Dr. Shilpi Mehta-Lee, an assistant professor at NYU said that studies have indicated one out of every 2,500 happen without the mother being aware of the pregnancy. Many of these result from a medical condition called "denial of pregnancy," but Mehta-Lee said it is also very possible that women either miss or don't show any physical indications.

"This [story] is a great opportunity to step back and say I haven't gotten my period or my period is irregular," the professor said as a warning to other women who may be oblivious to signs of pregnancy or ignoring them. "It's never too late. Better to initiate [prenatal] care 20 or 30 weeks [into a pregnancy] than never initiating care."

Staine, despite her surprise, is very happy about the new addition to her family. "My daughter is really happy, she finally has a little sister," Staine said. "She's the only girl. Now we have two girls and whole team of boys."
