The Everton Football Club has found a replacement for former boss David Moyes. His name is Roberto Martinez, and he led Wigan to the FA Cup last season.
A statement released by the team read, "Everton Football Club is today delighted to confirm the appointment of Roberto Martinez as its next manager. The 39-year-old Spaniard joins from Wigan Athletic and has signed a four-year contract at Goodison Park. Mr. Martinez will be officially unveiled as the club's 14th permanent manager at a media conference on Wednesday afternoon."
Martinez won the job over two other established names in the soccer universe, Vitor Pereira of Porto and Ralph Rangnick of Schalke. Wigan owner Dave Whelan had nothing but kind words for Martinez upon his exit, after topping Wembley in May 1-0 for the FA Cup.
"He organizes all kinds of things; he's so interested in the youngsters coming through. He's dedicated to players coming through at the age of 14, 15 - he wants them to play for the club he represents. I'm sure he'll pick that up at Everton because Everton do run a super youth scheme," Whelan said. "I think he will be perfect for that. He's a wonderful guy, very honest and he gives you 150 percent totally. We're sorry to lose him but I'm delighted he has gone to Everton. I wish him the very best of luck."
With Moyes in charge, Everton finished in the English Premier League top eight for the last six seasons, and has bested rival Liverpool in the standings for two years running. Martinez will be expected to at least maintain the steady success Moyes brought to Everton, and will likely be called upon to win more.
He brings a popular style of play to the pitch, heavily reliant on passing and a fast pace.
