The French Open's No. 2 seed, Roger Federer, was beaten in straight sets by Frenchman Jo-Wifried Tsonga today at Roland Garros.
Federer fell 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 to Tsonga in front of a supportive crowd, marking the second time in the last three major events the 31-year-old Federer failed to reach the semifinals. It was, however, only the fifth time in the last nine years that Federer was ousted so early in a Grand Slam event. Tsonga is no stranger to beating Federer; he knocked him out of Wimbledon contention in 2011.
Tsonga advances to the semifinals, where he will take No. 4 David Ferrer. Ferrer knocked off Tommy Robredo easily, dominating in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. Federer was sloppy, recording three double faults to Tsonga's none, and making 34 unforced errors to Tsonga's 22. The match was over in just 111 minutes.
In the other quarterfinal matchup of the day, Ferrer was masterful, winning 58 percent of his break points and capitalizing on the 28 unforced errors committed by the overmatched Robredo. Ferrer also won 7-of-12 break points, while Robredo was 0-for-1 in that category.
Tsonga's best finish in a Grand Slam event to date was in 2008, when he fell in the Australian Open Finals to Novak Djokovic. Tsonga could potentially have an opportunity to meet Djokovic again here at Roland Garros.
