The two headline-grabbing Los Angeles baseball clubs, the Angels (23-27) and the Dodgers (20-28) will kick off a two-game series tonight at 8:10 p.m. at Dodgers Stadium. While the Dodgers have struggled all season, the Angels appear to have righted their wayward ship, going 8-2 in their last 10 games while 2012 Rookie of the Year and MVP runner up Mike Trout has batted .372 with four home runs, 11 RBI and six stolen bases in the last 14 days. In the last six games, Trout has jumpstarted a six-game hitting streak, in which he is 12-for-26 with 10 runs scored.
Tonight, the Angels will face Zack Greinke (2-1, 3.48 ERA), whom the Angels traded for in 2012 to bolster a playoff push that never materialized. This year Greinke has been effective for the most part, but he missed several starts after fracturing his collarbone in a brawl with San Diego Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin. When asked about not re-signing with the Angels, Greinke said that the Angels "never really got into it when the details came."
One Angel who likely isn't happy to see Greinke is Josh Hamilton, who is 1-for-19 in his career against the Dodgers right-hander. Greinke will be opposed by C.J. Wilson, who in his last two starts has been adding length to his outings. In his last two outings, against the Chicago White Sox and Seattle Mariners, he has pitched 15 innings and given up just three runs while striking out 13.
Wilson will likely avoid Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier, whose poor splits against left-handed pitching forced manager Don Mattingly to bench him in three of the Dodgers' last six games. Struggling center fielder Matt Kemp was also benched yesterday, in an attempt to get the costly, talented outfield pair going.
