The Champions League is set for 2:00 p.m. at Wembley Stadium in England, and Bayern Munich will square off against their bitter Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund. The game will be televised on FOX, and can be live streamed for free by clicking this link.
Two German sides have never met in the Champions League final, adding lots of fuel to an already ferocious rivalry. There is no love lost between the two German squads; according to Bayern goalie Manuel Neuer, "A game against Dortmund, regardless of where it is, is never a friendly game."
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund left little doubt as to whether they represented the top two clubs in Europe. Historically powerful Barcelona was humbled by Bayern 3-0 in their last match and they lost 7-0 to the German powerhouse on the aggregate. Meanwhile, Dortmund was able to handle the equally lethal Real Madrid, losing 2-0 but holding them below the necessary threshold on the aggregate.
Always present, the rivalry between Bayern and Dortmund has been amped up in the past few years. Borussia captured back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, which sparked a massive answer from Bayern financially. The more traditional powerhouse flexed its monetary muscle and had one of the most dominant seasons of all-time.
Bayern was 29-4-1 this year, and totaled 91 points, a Bundesliga record shattering the previous mark (81), which was set by Dortmund just last season. For the fourth time in franchise history, Bayern held first place for the duration of the year; they also clinched the top spot earlier than any Bundesliga team had done before. The league was locked up after just 28 matches.
This deep-seated dislike extends even beyond the pitch, to the higher-up decision makers on either sideline. When the two teams last faced off in May, a 1-1 draw, Dortmund's coach, Jurgen Klopp, nearly came to blows with Bayern general manager, Matthias Sammer.
Expect fine play, and emotional fireworks.
