In the scariest sports story you will hear today, an Australian cricketer by the name of Phil Hughes was left in critical condition after being struck in the head by a bounced ball Tuesday.

In a match between his South Australian and New South Wales, the 25-year-old batsman wobbled and then outright collapsed on the pitch after a delivery from Sean Abbott.

Hughes' condition was so dire that at one point he needed to receive mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the scene. Hughes was rushed to Sydney's St. Vincent's Hospital, where he received surgery and was placed in an induced coma.

In a statement to the media, South Australia team doctor said that Hughes had "sustained a severe head injury...and remains in a critical condition."

"Unless there is any significant change there will be no further updates on his condition until tomorrow," he added, per the BBC.

The Hughes family was also able to release statement, given to the media through South Australia Cricket performance director Tim Nielson.

"[Hughes] is presently undergoing surgery and the outcome of that surgery is unlikely to be known in the next 24-48 hours," Nielsen said.

"In the meantime, we would really appreciate if you look after his family and friends and respect their privacy please."
