After a thrilling two days of golf, the PGA Tour Players Championship from TPC Sawgrass is underway today with several familiar names battling atop the leaderboard, while one fan favorite, Phil Mickelson, is done for the weekend after missing the cut. After day one, Tiger Woods was in the hunt for the first time in his Players Championship career, tied with Kevin Chappell and looking up at Lee Westwood and Roberto Castro. Castro had tied the Greg Norman and Fred Couples for the best round in the history of the course.
But oh, how things change. Sergio Garcia has stormed into the lead by shooting a 65 in round two, including eight birdies. Meanwhile, Castro cooled down to the point of freezing; he's now tied with 13 other players for 30th at 3-under par.
After seven birdies and an eagle in round one in which he shot a 63, Castro melted down in the second round, shooting a 78 that included five bogeys, a double bogey, and just one lonely birdie.
While all that is going on, the No. 1 golfer in the world, Tiger Woods, is alone in second place breathing down the neck of Garcia. He's been consistent in the Players Championship, shooting back-to-back 67s and remaining near the top since he teed off. Despite struggling in this tournament, Woods reminded reporters that he has won on this course before, at the 1994 U.S. Amateurs.
"I know how to get around this golf course. This course, more than most, really tests every facet of your game. You have to drive the ball well. You have to hit your irons in the correct spots, and if you don't hit your irons in the correct spots, you're going to have some really funky up-and-downs."
