The start of the 2013 season has been rocky for the 11-22 Los Angeles Angels, who have been burdened with heavy expectations and are dealing wit copious injuries. One Angel, however, is smiling today-starting pitcher C.J. Wilson, who is now engaged to his Brazilian supermodel girlfriend, Lisa Montenegro.
Wilson has had a rough go of it to start the season; his record stands at 3-1, a deceptive mark that disguises his slightly-less-than-ace-quality 3.68 ERA and his ghastly 1.54 WHIP. Wilson's home runs per nine innings are at 1.1, the third highest mark of his career, while he's walking more batters per nine innings (5.1) than he has since 2008.
Wilson had a breakthrough season in 2011 as a member of the Angels' chief rivals, the Texas Rangers. In 2011 Wilson won 16 games and posted a 2.94 ERA with a career-best 1.18 WHIP. The following season the Rangers let him walk to the Angels, and pursued Japanese phenom Yu Darvish, who has rewarded their gamble.
While Wilson was decent in his first season in Los Angeles, going 13-10 with a 3.83 ERA, Darvish was 16-9 with a 3.90 ERA, a lower WHIP than Wilson and 48 more strikeouts. The Rangers also outperformed the Angels all season long, holding the top spot in the American League West for the majority of the season before the Oakland Athletics usurped them in the final days.
Just last month, Wilson and Montenegro were featured in an article in which Wilson was asked to name the best and worst things about dating a supermodel. He said the negatives were constantly having to look his best, knowing the caliber of beauty he'd be seen with, and teammates constantly asking to be set up with Montenegro's supermodel friends.
He said benefits included being "invisible" when going out with her, healthy habits, and a level of respect given to someone able to maintain a relationship with a supermodel. Wilson said most people see that and think, "Well, that guy must really have his stuff together or she would've left him by now for greener pastures."
