The Los Angeles Angels fell to the Oakland Athletics Tuesday night 10-6, a brutal loss on the heels of dropping a 19-inning marathon to the same Oakland A's. Last night's defeat dropped the Angels to 9-17, the worst start in franchise history.
Oakland outfielder Yoenis Cespedes led the charge against the Angels last night, rapping two hits and driving in four runs. He played with a surprising amount of energy, considering the extended effort he had to give the night before. Cespedes credited his play to downing an energy drink upon arriving at the stadium. "The reason I was so good was because when I got here, I drank (an energy drink)," said Cespedes, who doubled and tripled to pace Oakland's 10-hit outburst. "I was ready for the game."
The Angels have sputtered badly this year, despite having superstar first baseman Albert Pujols and Rookie of the Year and American League MVP runner-up Mike Trout in tow. The Angels also picked up Josh Hamilton this offseason from the division rival Texas Rangers to beef up an already formidable batting order.
Things have not gone according to plan, however, and the Angels find themselves near the bottom of the American League West, propped up by only the lowly Houston Astros.
They will take on the A's today at 3:35 p.m. today in the third game of a three-game set and will send de facto ace C.J. Wilson (Jered Weaver is on the DL) to the hill to help avoid an embarrassing sweep. Wilson is 2-0 this season with a 4.30 ERA. He will be opposed by Tommy Milone, who enters the game 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA. The game can be live streamed here for free or here for a fee with better quality video. This game can be listened to at 95.7 FM "The Game."
The Angels will hope to get the slumping Hamilton going today-according to ESPN.com Hamilton is 5-for-11 in his career against Milone with one home run. He is 4-for-22 this year overall against Oakland in 2013, however, and he's posted ugly stats in April. Over the first month of the year Hamilton hit .204 with just two home runs and nine RBI. His on base plus slugging percentage (.548) resembles that of a weak-hitting, replacement-level middle infielder and his on base percentage is down more than 200 points from last year at this point in the season.
