Tim Tebow Released: Jets Release NFL's Most Famous Backup

Tebow-mania is leaving New York according to Brian Costello of The New York Post. The New York Jets clouded quarterback picture has become a tad clearer with the release of Tim Tebow, who created a lot of conversation last season but offered little production.

In his one season with the Jets, Tebow appeared in 12 games and threw just eight passes, completing six of them for 39 yards and zero touchdowns. Tebow was not much more of a threat in the running game either, rushing 32 times for 102 yards, an unimpressive 3.2 yards per carry. He failed to score a touchdown in 2012.

The arrival of West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, the Jets' second-round draft choice and presumed quarterback of the future, necessitated some sort of move. Upon joining Gang Green, Smith became the Jets' sixth quarterback, joining Tebow, Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who steadfastly stood by Sanchez last season during his struggles amid calls from the stands for Tebow's insertion, praised the popular backup on his way out.

"We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow. Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped.  Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward."

The Jets had acquired Tebow from the Denver Broncos for a fourth and a seventh rounder, which became center Philip Blake and linebacker Danny Trevathan. The move was once of the biggest reasons last season's general manager Mike Tannenbaum lost his job. "It's just a trade that didn't work out," Tannenbaum told ESPNNewYork.com. "Each year, we'll make 200-plus transactions. Some worked out, some didn't."

Following his disastrous Jets stint Tebow said, "I felt like it was a learning opportunity for me. There was a lot that I'll take from it. There's a lot that I learned and there are lot of relationships that I've built, so I know that it happened for a reason." It is unclear whether Tebow will latch on with another team, in a quarterback role or otherwise.
