Canelo Alvarez Next Fight: Miguel Cotto, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. 'Very, Very Possible' Opponents In 2015 [VIDEO]

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are both in the running to face Canelo Alvarez in May 2015, according to Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya.

Alvarez has talked of re-claiming Cinco De Mayo weekend back from Floyd Mayweather Jr., and plans on staging a superfight that weekend in 2015. Unfortunately, that will be the next time fans get to see Alvarez fight.

Alvarez was slated to begin his HBO contract on December 6 against Joshua Clottey in a non-pay-per-view bout, but an ankle injury has forced the cancellation of that fight. "It's a muscle strain that he's had for a while now, and it happened way before the Lara fight," De La Hoya told RingTV.com on Monday. "He knows that 2015 is going to be a huge year for him, so he wants to take care of it right now."

Going forward though, De La Hoya doesn't seem to be shying away from having his prized fighter jump right into a difficult fight his next time out.

"I'm going to be talking to the team over the next couple of days, but, obviously, Cinco de Mayo is the date that Canelo wants to fight on, so, obviously, there has to be a huge name, so we will see," De La Hoya said.

"Look, there are two options out there that Canelo is considering, and those are Julio Cesar Chavez, which is very, very possible, and Miguel Cotto, which is another fight that is very, very possible."

Cotto last fought in June, earning a shockingly one-sided stoppage victory against Sergio Martinez at Madison Square Garden. Cotto is 2-0 since hiring Freddie Roach as his trainer-he had lost his previous two bouts to Mayweather and Austin Trout.

Chavez last fought in March against Brian Vera, cementing a controversial unanimous decision he earned in 2013 over him. Prior to that Chavez lost a unanimous decision to Martinez, but almost knocked him out in the final round with a late burst of offense.
