The Miami Dolphins made the first aggressive upward move of the 2013 NFL draft when they traded their No. 12 pick plus the No. 42 pick to the Oakland Raiders for the No. 3 spot, where they selected Oregon pass rusher Dion Jordan.
By drafting Jordan the Dolphins plan to have the most fearsome edge rushers in the AFC East when Jordan is paired with quarterback-eater Cameron Wake. The six feet six inch outside linebacker clocked a 4.85 40-yard dash, and can get out in coverage almost as well as he can get after the passer.
For the Raiders, they earned themselves an extra second-round pick while taking cornerback D.J. Hayden out of the University of Houston. Hayden is a medical marvel who is lucky to be alive after a knee to the chest in practice severed the vein that brings blood to his heart. He can shore up a secondary that was one of the NFL's worst in 2012.
The next big movers were the St. Louis Rams, who moved into the No. 8 spot held by the Buffalo Bills and snagged the top playmaker in this draft, Tavon Austin out of West Virginia. It was a smart move as many experts had begged Austin as the top choice for the New York Jets, who picked ninth. The Rams got the eighth spot as well as the 72nd and surrendered the 16th, 46th, 78th and 222nd picks to the Bills. The Bills were smart to move back, because their man was Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel, a total reach that high up.
The Atlanta Falcons made a move, trading into the No. 22 pick that was held by the Rams and giving up the 30th, 92nd, and 198th picks in this draft. The Falcons used the No. 22 pick on cornerback Desmond Trufant out of Washington. The Falcons also received a 2014 seventh-rounder in the deal.
Rounding out the first-round trades were the Minnesota Vikings, who acquired their third first round pick of the night from the New England Patriots. The Vikings gave New England their 53rd, 82nd, 102nd and 229th picks for the 29th pick. With that choice they took wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson out of Tennessee.
