Keith "One-Time" Thurman said prior to Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s rematch with Marcos Maidana that he'd like to face any welterweight in the Top 10. Amir Khan is in that class according to most lists, but Thurman's of the mind that he's in over his head.
"I already said that he don't belong in the welterweight division," Thurman said. "That was a clear statement of mine. But when he first got out there [at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where the two were interviewed together] he was very polite to me. I didn't want to be disrespectful. I wanted to keep it nice. I don't think that we're going to fight each other soon.
"I would sign the contract. I'm going to be fighting in November. He told me that he's going to be fighting in December so we're still on different paths."
Khan is interested in fighting Mayweather in May, but the pound-for-pound king recently made comments that seemed to indicate a Khan fight could be far away.
"He [Khan] still got Danny Garcia problems and there's another guy over in the UK. No, not Kell Brook. Kell Brook is a good, little fighter. I was impressed. I'm talking about another guy that slept Amir Khan," Mayweather told Fighthype.com.
Kell Brook is another fighter that could make sense for Thurman, but if Thurman plans on fighting in November, a Brook matchup would also have to wait. Thurman did, however, say he's willing to travel to the U.K. to face either Khan or Brook so those matchups may be in the offing.
Until then, Thurman may have to continue fighting the best competition. "The welterweight division is so packed. They have options and too many options. That's how I'm being avoided right now," Thurman said.
