The Miami Dolphins have received permission to talk to the agent for Kansas City Chiefs left tackle Branden Albert, a potential window into the plans the Chiefs have for spending the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft, according to reports and confirmed by Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.
Reid had initially said the Chiefs hadn't given Miami permission to speak with Albert, despite reports that the left tackle, who lives in Miami, was planning to visit the Dolphins for a physical in the next few days.
I goofed that up," Reid said. "I've been so engaged with the football team and this minicamp and, really, having fun with that, it was just a miscommunication. Dorsey does a great job. I trust him so much I can focus on the football part with the players here and the staff. When I was asked (by the media) about it coming off the practice field, I basically thought it was a dead issue, only to have that clarified later as to where it stood. But we haven't granted any permission with the exception of allowing (the Dolphins) to speak to the agent and there's been nothing new on that front."
Albert appears to be a perfect fit with the Dolphins, not only because he makes his home there, but also because former Pro Bowler Jake Long left Miami for the St. Louis Rams this offseason.
Earlier this month, Albert told NFL Network, "I want that long-term commitment. But as you know in football, you don't have too much control of the situation. I want to play for the Chiefs, but I want that commitment long term."
The Chiefs allowing Miami to speak with Albert's representatives could also signal that they are preparing to take Luke Joeckel with the first pick in the draft. Joeckel has been the starting left tackle for the Texas A&M Aggies since his true freshman year.
