Yovani Gallardo, the ace of the Milwaukee Brewers, was arrested by Milwaukee police for driving under the influence early Tuesday morning, according to reports. Gallardo was picked up driving 40 miles per hour, by himself, on a Milwaukee highway. His breath test reading was .22, more than three times the legal limit.
Police reports say Gallardo had red eyes, smelled of alcohol, slurred his words, switched lanes erratically and failed field sobriety tests. Despite his impaired state, Milwaukee County office spokeswoman Fran McLaughlin said Gallardo was very cooperative with the officers and told reporters Gallardo said, "He had a couple of beers."
The Brewers released a statement saying, "We have expressed our disappointment to him and know he understands that behavior of this nature is of great concern to everyone in the organization. Yovani has acknowledged the seriousness of this incident and is taking full accountability for his actions."
Gallardo accepted responsibility for his actions at the ballpark on Tuesday before Milwaukee's tilt with the San Francisco Giants. "I'm going to make sure something like this never happens again. Whatever circumstances, consequences ... whatever I have to do so this won't happen again, I'm going to do it."
In Milwaukee a first arrest for drunken driving is not a criminal offense and the biggest fine Gallardo faces is $800, according to McLaughlin.
The Brewers have started slowly in 2013, currently sitting in fourth place in the National League Central division with a 4-8 record. Gallardo hasn't helped matters, going 0-1 in his first three starts. He has a 6.61 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and his strikeouts per nine innings, which for his career is a 9.12, is currently at a 4.95.
He has also been unlucky, posting a .393 BABIP, or batting average on balls in play. His career BABIP is .298, almost 100 points lower than the number he is presently sporting.
