Victor Cruz, the most productive wide receiver on the New York Giants over the past two seasons has struggled mightily to negotiate a long-term deal, despite Cruz repeatedly voicing his desire to remain with Big Blue.
Now, following a move to Creative Artists Agency and Roc Nation Sports, founded by Jay-Z, Cruz is telling sources he sees a deal with the Giants in the cards, according to reports.
Two sources close to Cruz have said Cruz wants to capitalize on the business and marketing opportunities that will come with being associated wit Jay-Z and Roc Nation. One of the sources is quoted as saying, "[Cruz] told his agents not to sign him with another team because he wants to work with Jay-Z. There might have been a couple of teams interested, but he didn't want to go anywhere."
Cruz is currently a restricted free agent, and any team that signs him to an offer sheet will be required to forfeit a first-round draft choice to the Giants if the Giants decline to match the offer.
The wide receiver has been developing a clothing line, and grew up in the Tri-State area in Paterson, New Jersey. After bursting into the NFL consciousness and capturing fans' hearts with his salsa-dancing, Cruz has become a powerful presence beyond the football field in Campbell's Chunky Soup, Time Warner Cable and Foot Locker commercials.
Cruz is the second athlete to join Roc Nation Sports, following New York Yankees' second baseman Robinson Cano. Jay-Z is currently selling his shares of ownership in the Brooklyn Nets so he can be a part of signing NBA clients as well.
Ben Dogra, one of CAA's top agents said Jay-Z was involved in the recruitment of Cruz. Another agent said, "If you bring a kid to a meeting and Jay-Z is there, he could be a hell of a closer."
