Lakers Coach Rumors: Byron Scott Gets Third Interview, Favorite for Head Coach Position? [VIDEO]

The Los Angeles Lakers will bring in Byron Scott to interview for the head coach position for a third time on Wednesday. Scott will meet with the Lakers once more as the team says it will make a choice for it’s next head coach in the next ‘week or two.’

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said the team will hire a candidate soon, but also said the interview process is far from over. Kupchak spoke about the search in an interview after the Lakers Summer League game on Monday.

"Maybe we can wait until September," Kupchak joked. "Obviously that's one of the next things that we're going to address, and with putting the roster together and getting through the draft and getting through this last period, a week or two, the next thing we're going to work on is the coach, and I think we're going to have somebody in the next couple weeks.”

Other names that were tied to the Laker job include Mike Dunleavy, Kurt Rambis, Alvin Gentry, Lionel Hollins and George Karl. Hollins, Gentry and Rambis have all found new jobs and many believe any talks with Karl were casual in nature.

Scott has said many times that he would love the Laker position and has even received an endorsement from Kobe Bryant in the process. Scott spoke about the position on Time Warner Cable SportsNet, Friday.

"I know, in my dealings in talking with Mitch and Jim [Buss, vice president of player personnel], they want to get the roster together and then focus on the coaching. So, myself, or whoever else are the other candidates, that's what we're all waiting for and we're kind of looking at what's going on [in free agency] to see if that's all done and then see next week what they're going to do with the coaching vacancy.”

Scott spent 11 of his 14 in the NBA with the Lakers and won three NBA Championships with the franchise in 1985, 1987 and 1988.
