Miguel Cotto Next Fight: Canelo Alvarez 'List' Of Potential Opponents Includes Cotto [VIDEO]

After defeating Erislandy Lara on Saturday in Las Vegas, the boxing world is trying to figure out what's next for Mexican icon Canelo Alvarez. Certain names have been floated such as James Kirkland, but Golden Boy founder Oscar De La Hoya said WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto is "on the list."

Canelo: Erislandy Lara rematch can happen "when he learns to fight"

After Cotto defeated Sergio Martinez for the middleweight crown on June 7, De La Hoya told RingTV.com "I would love to work with Cotto Promotions on a possible Canelo-Cotto fight. "July 12 is very important toward possibly seeing the pugilistic rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico once again. It would be Salvador [Sanchez] vs. [Wilfredo] Gomez, [Julio Cesar] Chavez Sr. vs [Edwin] Rosario, [Oscar] De la Hoya vs. [Felix] Trinidad. Huge!"

Now that Alvarez has won his big fight, De La Hoya said Canelo is open to facing Cotto. "'Canelo' wants to fight the very best and he's going to continue to do so. Our options are wide open. Obviously, Cotto's on the list," De La Hoya said.

Timothy Bradley would like to fight Cotto

There has also been talk of a Canelo-Cotto clash taking place in 2015. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has brought up Timothy Bradley as a potential opponent for Cotto this winter, while Alvarez's trainer Chepo Reynoso has talked of May 2015 for his star fighter to have the mega fight.

"We've made him, I think, a major star," Arum said of Bradley. "Timothy is a great fighter, a great kid and great in the ring. People want to see him fight, and so there are a lot of big fights out there for Tim. We've made a lot of money, and we'll continue to make him a lot of money."

As for Reynoso, he said "On Sunday we met with Oscar [De La Hoya] to discuss the future of Canelo. A fight with Cotto is a natural, but we probably should wait until May 2015."
