Tonight at 10:10 p.m. ET the New York Yankees (31-31) will resume their rivalry with former star Robinson Cano and his Seattle Mariners (34-29) at Safeco Field for a three-game set. The Yankees will send Vidal Nuno (1-2, 5.33 ERA) to the mound against Hisashi Iwakuma (4-2, 2.66 ERA).
The Yankees slumping offense is meeting the M's at a bad time. They're 0-3 against Seattle this year, which has a collective 1.91 ERA in winning eight of its last nine games.
"Our last seven or eight starts have been pretty darn good. Our starters have given us everything we've asked them and probably a little bit more," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "With that our bullpen is even better."
The Yankees haven't topped four runs in their last 10 games, and have lost seven of them. Still, manager Joe Girardi is refusing to panic and re-vamp his whole lineup. "The one thing you can't do is you can't necessarily change everything," Girardi said. "You look at what guys have done in the past, you look at what guys are doing this year, and you try to piece together what you feel is the best lineup every day.
"We've struggled the last three or four weeks scoring runs. We know we need to score more, but guys are going through a time. You just have to ride it out a little bit."
One change they might want to make is putting center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, in the middle of a hot streak, back atop the order. He's hit .385 in his past 13 games, and might be able to change the dynamic early on by getting on base for the slumping boppers.
