With Donald Sterling on the outs and Steve Ballmer on his way in, could the new look Clippers make a huge splash in the 2014 free agency pool? Could Ballmer being the new owner of the Clippers help them land LeBron James this coming offseason?
Larry Coon of ESPN believes that the Clippers could be very bold this offseason and take a huge leap of faith to try and land James. He believes it starts with the Clippers new ownership.
Obviously, James' joining the Clippers would have been out of the question with Sterling still there, but with Sterling now almost certainly gone, might James again consider the Clippers a possibility? And could his solidarity with friend and union president Chris Paul, the Clippers' leader, manifest itself in free agency?
Ballmer, fresh off his $2 billion investment, will surely take big steps to make the Clippers a better team on the court. He will improve the scouting and analytics, and likely will allow the team to spend well above the luxury-tax threshold. But ultimately, it all comes down to acquiring the right players.
James has his pick of the litter when it comes to free agency and could put all these rumors to bed if he just opts back into his Heat contract. If LeBron opts out of his deal the rumor mill might break with all the teams that will attempt to pursue him. James is worth his weight in gold and could turn any team into a potential championship threat, just look at his time in Cleveland.
If Los Angeles can convince James to come to Hollywood they are the second coming of the big three overnight and could be better on paper than the Heat’s big three.
