Linebacker Aldon Smith of the San Francisco 49ers pleaded no contest Wednesday to three felony charges for possession of illegal assault weapons and two counts of misdemeanor DUI.
Smith, 24, is slated for sentencing on July 25. He faces up to four years in prison.
"We are aware that Aldon entered a plea today in a case that we have closely monitored," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "Today was an important step towards bringing that situation to a resolution."
Smith, a top-level pass rusher, had a franchise-best 19½ sacks in 2012. He registered 8½ sacks and 34 tackles the following season.
In April, Smith was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport following an altercation with security personnel. During the incident, Smith it was alleged that Smith stated he had a bomb.
