The Darrelle Revis trade rumors have picked up steam recently, with Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reporting "two or three legitimate buyers" in the Revis sweepstakes. A source close to the Jets was quoted as saying "He's gone. This is happening. They're moving him. They can't keep him. They're rebuilding. They're starting fresh." Two of the teams linked to Revis talks are the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons, the two squads that bumped heads in the 2012 NFC Championship game.
The 49ers have been involved in Revis rumors for several weeks, because they have a loaded roster with relatively young players, a need for a top-shelf cornerback, and 14 picks in the upcoming draft, which will go up to 15 once they complete their Alex Smith trade. The Jets, who appear to be in a rebuilding mode, could use multiple selections to fill their many holes. A few weeks ago, the Jets released two aging linebackers, Bart Scott and Calvin Pace, who had starting roles last season and safety Eric Smith who was in their defensive backfield rotation. With Smith off their books, the 49ers can release some players and restructure existing deals to make the room for the $6 million Revis is due to make in 2013. Revis has expressed interest in joining the stacked Niners defense.
The Falcons, meanwhile, just released Dunta Robinson and are unlikely to sign Brent Grimes to big money after he suffered a severe knee injury early in the season. The Falcons have all seven of their 2013 picks and have made bold moves in the past, most notably sending two first-round picks packaged with three later-round choices to the Cleveland Browns for Julio Jones.
Albert Breer of the NFL Network tweeted the expected haul for Revis' services will be a first-rounder in this draft as well as a high pick in next year's draft.
