San Jose lit the lamp early and often in Game 1 with captain Joe Thornton scoring just three minutes into the game with a goal that was eventually followed up by tallies from rookie Tomas Hertl, Patrick Marleau, Raffi Torres and Marc-Edouard Vlasic, which staked the Sharks to a 5-0 lead halfway through the game.
Los Angeles did its best to battle back in the third period as Jake Muzzin, Slava Voynov and Trevor Lewis each found twine in the third period, but the Sharks iced the game with a Brent Burns empty-net goal to seal the win.
Kings netminder Jonathan Quick was chased from the game after allowing five goals and turning aside 28 shots while Antti Niemi cruised to a victory in the crease for the Sharks after stopping 31 shots and allowing just three goals.
These California rivals continue their best-of-seven series when they take the ice at the SAP Center tonight for Game 2 in San Jose.
