Miguel Cabrera contract controversy: Can Bryce Harper, Mike Trout earn $40 million a season? [GIFS]

What is a two-time American League MVP and triple crown winner worth on the open market? The Detroit Tigers will never have to worry about that again as they have signed Miguel Cabrera to a 10-year extension worth $292 million, but what of the fallout from the rest of the league?

Take all of that in and understand the pros and cons of this move. The Tigers keep their MVP in the clubhouse until 2023 when he will be 40 years old and most likely just the team's designated hitter. The cons greatly outweigh the pros from the league office's standpoint.

Players like Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez have been cautionary tales about how fast an MVP can decline and become a $25 million plus issue. The Tigers take a leap of faith and get Cabrera to stay in Detroit before he was supposed to be a free agent in 2015. The sheer numbers are what should worry the league most.

American League Central Preview & Predictions

At close to $30 million a year the Tigers are showing that the mega deal the MLB is trying to do away with is still alive and well for the right players and throw caution to the wind with the back half of the contracts.

With the day of reckoning coming for the Nationals and Angels getting closer by the day, you have to wonder what Bryce Harper and Mike Trout are going to get from their teams. Trout contract rumors have been circulating around the $35 million per year range and Harper should get somewhere in the high $20 million-range. Taking a stand here and now could save the MLB from the eventual burden of these deals becoming common place.

If the MLB wants to cut down on their payroll and mega deal issues they have the only logical solution is a salary cap or be crushed under the weight of the possible $40 million deal Trout, Harper could command.
