Wichita State earned their No. 1 seed and had such an incredible season that they received the chance to play a play-in No. 16 seed in the second round. Their opponent today at 7:10 p.m. on CBS is a sub-.500 Cal Poly team that reached the tournament by winning both their conference tourney and beating Texas Southern. Watch the matchup on CBS or live stream it free here. Wichita State fans can listen to the game on KFH 1240 AM, while Cal Poly fans can tune in on 1280 AM ESPN.
The Wichita State Shockers were the surprise of the Tournament last year by making it to the Final Four and throwing a scare into the eventual-champion Louisville Cardinals. This year, they enter as the No. 1 seed but everything still feels familiar to coach Gregg Marshall.
"Great to be back," Marshall said. "Shocker fans know their way to St. Louis. It's like we were just here, kind of like ground hog day." As much as they feel at home in the Big Dance these days, Marshall knows that last year's success means nothing in March Madness. "We are 0-0 in this tournament and now we need a six-game win streak. That's what we'll be focusing on."
Meanwhile, Cal Poly's coach seems awfully happy just to be on the big stage. "It's great to make it," coach Joe Callero said. "But it's a little better to do something once you get there and get a victory."
For those unfamiliar with Cal Poly, they are led by senior forward Chris Eversley, who registered team-highs in points per game (13.7) and rebounds per game (7.2) this season. The Shockers' leading man is Cleanthony Early (15.6 ppg, 5.9 rpg), who was a consistent force all year for the undefeated Missouri Valley Conference champs.
