NFL Free Agency: Leagues worst position group; Carolina Panthers, New York Jets scrambling after latest failures? [VIDEO] [GIFS]

NFL free agency is in full swing, but some teams have completely struck out in their early attempts to improve for the 2014 campaign. Some position groups are truly awful at this point and could beyond repair even after the draft. Some of those groups are on 2013 playoff teams.

NFL Draft Team Preview: New England Patriots

Carolina Panthers: Wide Receiver
The Panthers were a nice surprise from 2013, but only a week into free agency they are a shell of that team. Among the various positions they are depleted at, wide receiver is now a huge need for Carolina. The loses of Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell may not look like much on paper, but if the season started today the Panthers would’t have a single receiver on the roster that caught a pass in Carolina. The Panthers also missed out on every free agent target like Hakeem Nicks and James Jones. The draft is loaded with wide receiver talent, but that could be a luxury considering their line situation.

Cleveland Browns: Quarterback

How can the Browns situation at quarterback get any worse? The Browns had two first round picks in 2012 and now neither is on their roster. Even when they get a flash of hope in Brian Hoyer, he tears his ACL on a freak hit. Cutting Brandon Weeden was inevitable, but with the Browns not speaking to any quarterback at the combine it worries me what their thoughts are at QB.

New York Jets: Cornerback
For a team that prides themselves on having a great corner year in and year out, the Jets are empty at this point. Don't get me wrong cutting Antonio Cromartie was the right move as was not matching the Giants offer on Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but where do you go from here? With little talent left in the free agency pool the popular pick is the draft and specifically Justin Gilbert from Oklahoma State. Don’t think it’s too farfetched that the Jets look at fossils like Champ Bailey and Asante Samuel.
