The No. 10 Kansas Jayhawks (24-8, 14-4 Big 12) survived a serious scare from Oklahoma State Thursday afternoon, and won't have any easier of a time against No. 16 Iowa State (24-7, 11-7 Big 12) on ESPNU. The Jayhawks and Cowboys duked it out yesterday in what may turn out to be the best game of the conference tournament slate, with Andrew Wiggins' strong play overcoming Marcus Smart's big game.
"It was an unbelievable game. Two teams competing hard, and certainly I think the first day of the most competitive league in America hasn't disappointed so far," said coach Bill Self. "That took everything we had. We had to play out of foul trouble, and I think it took everything Iowa State had to win earlier today. So you'll have two tired teams that have to recover fast and get ready (for Friday)."
Wiggins hung 30 on Oklahoma State, hitting 9-of-17 shots from the field, as Kansas closed strong on a 9-0 run. He will be up against it vs. Iowa State's Melvin Ejim though, who leads the Cyclones at 18.4 points per game, while also pulling down 8.7 boards. He has 24 points and 10 rebounds in a rugged win over the Kansas State Wildcats yesterday.
The Cyclones have lost two games already to Kansas, but were competitive in both. Tonight they'll get a third crack and this time the Jayhawks will be without center Joel Embiid. "Kansas is a team that you've already played twice," Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg said. "We know everybody. Everybody knows us."
Without Embiid patrolling the paint, points could come more easily for one of the nation's highest-scoring offenses.
