Jon Jones, the UFC light heavyweight champion and pound-for-pound mixed martial arts king, seems to be fending off title requests from all angles. Not too long after Phil Davis essentially called him soft, new light heavyweight Daniel Cormier was begging for a chance at the strap.
Daniel Cormier thinks Rashad Evans is tougher opponent than Jon Jones?
"Hey Jon, this is Daniel Cormier - bro, brother, would you be willing to give me a title shot? I'm asking nicely. I'm not being aggressive. I'm not trying to be confrontational, Jon, I'm just asking. Would you be willing to give me a chance to fight? Please, brother, please. Make the decision," Cormier said on Fox Sports.
While he only has one fight at light heavyweight under his belt, Cormier is an accomplished fighter and undefeated in the UFC. He is 14-0, with wins over Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Frank Mir and Roy Nelson to boast about. Still, his victory over Pat Cummins at UFC 170 wasn't enough to sway Jones, with whom he has had multiple nasty spats.
"First and foremost, since you're speaking more respectfully, I'll say congratulations on your victory and your weight loss," Jones said. "But as far as giving you a title shot, I have no interest in fighting you right now, only because of the fact that you really haven't fought anyone that I consider a top-level fighter."
Phil Davis thinks lesser fighters are getting title shots, Jon Jones is soft?
Jones then lashed out at the system for which contenders rise up the UFC ranks, sounding a lot like Davis did a few days ago.
"I'm kind of sick of seeing UFC light heavyweights fight against kind of like 'cans' until they get a title shot. I really want to see a top contender fight a top contender and I think you need to fight someone a little bit more well-known than Patrick Cummins," Jones complained. "Fight against Rashad [Evans], fight against somebody legit, man. Then I think it would be a little more appropriate to give you that title shot."
Granted, Cormier was scheduled to face Rashad Evans at UFC 170, but he had to pull out because of injury. In any case, Jones must worry about Glover Teixeira first. If he gets by Glover, it is widely expected he will grant Alexander Gustafsson a rematch after their thriller at UFC 165.
