The San Diego Union Tribune reported that San Diego State running back Adam Muema left the NFL Combine on Sunday, saying that he simply was "following God," who he says told him that if he's miss the Combine workouts, he would play for the Seattle Seahawks.
Playing for the Seahawks is Muema's dream, according to the Union-Tribune. He said NFL teams are aware of his decision.
"Can't go wrong with God," he said. But the silence from the NFL is deafening.
Not one scout or coach from any NFL team has been quoted in response to Muema's decision. Surely, someone had to bring up the subject with Pete Carroll or someone from the Seahawks organization.
Muema, who rushed for 1,244 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Aztecs in 2013, declared for the draft as an early-entry junior. The Union-Tribune reported that prior to his declaration, the NFL Draft Advisory Board projected him to be a fourth- to seventh-round draft pick.
He'll have another chance to work out for pro scouts at the San Diego State Pro Day next month, but unless he has a monster workout, who will pay attention to the workout of a prospective player that wants to play for only one team?
The 21-year-old Muema said "(God) told me to sit down, be quiet and enjoy the peace."
He said he communicates with God through numbers. But someone on Earth better communicate with him to be open to an audible - whether or not it's from God.
The Seahawks, coming off their Super Bowl XLVIII victory earlier this month over the Denver Broncos, already have three running backs that could lessen Muema's chances of landing a job there. Marshawn Lynch is one of the featured backs in the NFL, and Robert Turbin is a quality backup, CBSSports.com is reporting.
Carroll also is high on running back Christine Michael, whom the Seahawks drafted last season with their first pick. He characterized Michael as the team's best "breakout" candidate, according to CBSSports.com.
At least Muema's faith has given him notoriety. Whether that's good or bad, Muema will find out in due time.
