Tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET, the Montreal Canadiens (27-17-5, 59 points) and Pittsburgh Penguins (34-13-2, 70 points) hit the ice at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh for the second of three meetings against each other this season. Montreal enters play having not lost back-to-back games yet in 2014 while Pittsburgh's 13-game winning streak at home was snapped by the Florida Panthers, but the team still leads the Eastern Conference in home wins and points.
The Penguins played just their second game in eight days on Monday and it showed as the Panthers handed them a 5-1 loss to halt their home winning streak at 13 games.
"It is uncharacteristic for our team to lay an egg like that," defenseman Matt Niskanen said per NHL.com. "We'll have some bad nights where we make mistakes or our decision making is off, things like that. Since I've been here, the compete [level] and the work ethic has always been ahead of premium. It's just there, we never even have to talk about it. I think we have to recognize that it was awful [Monday] and get ready for a hard-nosed game on Wednesday."
The Canadiens know that it will be tough trying to beat Pittsburgh at home, where they are 20-4-0.
"The games get tough and the points get tough," Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban said Tuesday via NHL.com. "When you're playing great teams you gotta bring your 'A' game. We gotta make sure we're bringing our 'A' game. We just have to be consistent in doing the right things. Once we get back to that we'll be fine."
Subban (8-27-35), Max Pacioretty (21-9-30) and Tomas Plekanec (16-14-30) pace the Canadiens in scoring while Pacioretty has points in four straight games and five of his last six and Plekanec has six points in eight January games thus far.
The Penguins, meanwhile, have been led by captain and NHL points leader Sidney Crosby (25-43-68), Chris Kunitz (24-25-49) and Evgeni Malkin (12-36-48) while Malkin has at least one point in six of his last seven games.
In net, Pittsburgh will likely to turn to Marc-Andre Fleury, who is 27-11-1 with a 2.33 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage while Montreal will likely go with Carey Price between the pipes, who is 22-13-4 with a 2.30 GAA and a .924 save percentage.
The Canadiens look to win in a tough place to score points while the Penguins look to start on a new home winning streak when the lights come up tonight at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
