MLB Trade Rumors [VIDEO]: Ike Davis To Brewers? Milwaukee Near Deal With Mets?

The Milwaukee Brewers have been a potential trade partner for the New York Mets in regards to first baseman Ike Davis all offseason long, and reports indicate that the "Brew Crew" was close to hammering out a deal for Davis before they backed off due to their unwillingness to give up a pitching prospect, reports indicate.

According to SB Nation, the two sides were in talks and could have possibly worked out a deal until the Brewers backed off because they didn't see eye-to-eye with what the Mets were asking for.

"In a talk with the media today, Brewers' general manager Doug Melvin suggested that, although the Mets and Brewers are still talking about Ike Davis, there has been no agreement in what should be exchanged for the Mets' beleaguered first baseman," SB Nation reported Tuesday.

The report indicates that the Mets were asking for a top pitching prospect from the Brewers, and the team didn't want to part ways with a top prospect and wasn't willing to risk their future on an inconsistent Davis. Davis has shown flashes of being a great hitter--notably in 2012 where he got off to a rocky start but had a dominant second half and finished with 32 homers and 90 RBIs.

"I think we've pretty well stood by - the one thing we've done - is we do not want to give up pitching," Melvin said on Monday, according to Latino Post.

While the Brewers and Mets remain far apart in what the return would be for a Davis trade, Melvin noted that the talks are far from dead but the team's still can't agree on a deal.

"We haven't gotten to anything where we're comfortable with the deal from our side, and he's not been comfortable with the deal from his side," the GM told reporters per SB Nation.

The Mets may hold some leverage in the negotiations as there aren't a lot of options left at first base for the Brewers to pursue and the team seems unwilling to go with Juan Francisco as their starting first baseman for 2014.

Davis struggled throughout 2013 and even spent some time in the minors. Davis hit just .205 through 103 games with nine homers and 32 RBIs, but the lefty still has power potential which could make the Brewers willing to roll the dice. If the Mets move Davis, they are likely to go with Lucas Duda as the everyday first baseman.

Davis is a career .242 hitter with 67 homers and 219 RBIs. It remains to be seen if he'll be moved.
