Mike Shanahan Fired, What's Next For RG3, Washington Redskins? [VIDEO]

The Washington Redskins have fired coach Mike Shanahan after a 3-13 season that was dampened even more by a simmering feud with star quarterback Robert Griffin III.

According to ESPN, Shanahan was officially relieved of his duties early Monday along with all of his assistants. The coach had previously told the website he expected a quick decision about his future and hinted he was hopeful of a return given he was still owed $7 million on his contract.

"Redskins fans deserve a better result," owner Dan Snyder said in a statement released by the team. "We thank Mike for his efforts on behalf of the Redskins. We will focus on what it takes to build a winning team, and my pledge to this organization and to this community is to continue to commit the resources and talent necessary to put this team back in the playoffs."

In his four-year tenure, Shanahan had a 24-20 record, the worst record of any NFC team during his time on the job and the same winning percentage posted by predecessors Steve Spurrier and Jim Zorn. The 3-13 Redskins finished the 2013 season in the midst of an eight game losing streak.

Shanahan also battled with RGIII over the direction of the offense, with the feud culminating in the rising, second-year quarterback being benched for the last three games of the season.

"We going to take a start, step-by-step approach to finding the right coach to return the Redskins to where we believe we should be,"GM Bruce Allen added in the team's release. "We will analyze accurately and honestly all of the decisions that were made over the past year."
