Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman and the team's top receiver Brandon Marshall have supported Jay Cutler as the No.1 quarterback on the team despite Josh McCown's emergence during Cutler's absence, however Marshall insinuated that some people in the Bears locker room have had some "chatter" over who should take the reins to the team's offense under center.
NFL.com reports that Marshall said on Fox Sports radio that the Bears' decision to turn the ball over to a healthy Cutler and take it out of the hands of a red-hot McCown was not unanimous in the locker room.
"I'm gonna be honest with you, there is a little chatter," Marshall said via NFL.com. "There's a human-element side of things in the sporting world."
McCown filled in seamlessly at signal caller with Cutler sidelined with a high-ankle sprain for the past few weeks, but upon Cutler's return, Trestman turned the ball back over to him despite McCown playing solidly.
"You have a QB like Josh McCown playing so hot, not only playing great ball for the Bears, but he's one of the hotter QBs in the NFL," Marshall said on the program, according to NFL.com. "He was up there with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, those few weeks he was leading us. So naturally there's going to be a little chatter."
Cutler didn't play the greatest game in his return Week 15 against Cleveland, but he did throw for three fourth quarter touchdowns in the team's 38-31 victory over the Cleveland Browns to improve the team to 8-6 on the season.
Cutler is 189-for-296 (63.9%) for 2,173 yards with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in nine games this season while McCown is 147-for-220 (66.8%) for 1,809 yards with 13 scores and one pick through seven appearances.
The Bears are hoping to win the NFC North and will play at the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday before hosting the division rival Green Bay Packers in the regular season finale on Dec. 29.
Despite the chatter and barring injury, Cutler will be under center for both of those games.
